America: Think Global, Act Local!

By Carlos Martínez

About the Photograph:

I came across the homeless person in the photograph in the East Village after visiting Out Now!, an art project related to the occupation of Iraq. The only thing I could offer when he asked me for “spare change” was a giveaway from the exhibition: a “NO NO AMERICA” t-shirt. Although the U.S. shares responsibility in many international issues, it should prioritize the pressing domestic problems facing local communities, such as homelessness, job readiness and educational opportunities.

CARLOS MARTINEZ is a Colombian-born emerging photographer based in Jackson Heights, Queens. This social and environmental activist is a teaching artist at the International Center of Photography’s youth program at The Point in the South Bronx. This Spring, in partnership with Friends of Island Academy and ICP, he will be involved in a photography program  for youth transitioning out of incarceration. In addition to photography, he is currently in collaboration to develop the Open Green Map, a social mapping online platform (for more information visit GreenMap.org).
